A recent study, which followed about 27, 863 females and 15, 505 males: a total of 43, 368 individuals for 12.6 years to examine the impact of physical acivities on Parkinson's disease risks has shown that a medium amount of physcal activities, such as house hold chores, walking the dog(s), liesure exercises, commuting, dancing or using the stairs can lower the chances of developing the condition.
In other to anaylse the link between exercise frequency and the risk of Parkinsonism, researchers at the Swedish National March Cohort have analysed information provided by questionnaire which defines a medium frequency of physical activity as 6 hours of exercise per week, which translates into about an hour of exercise daily.
Researchers from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden have reported these findings in Brain:A Journal of Neurology. Lead author, Karin Wirdefeldt, a researcher in medical epidemiology, biostatistics and clinical neurosciences, in explaining the study says "this was a prospective study including both males and females, and all information on physical activities was accessed before the disease occurrence, making recall bias and and reverse causation less likely".
A prospective study is one that follows up on a group of individuals over a period of time, while looking for changes and outcomes , such as the development of a disease.
All participants in the study were Parkinsonism-free on 1 October, 1997, the start of the follow up period and were followed from this baseline until the date of their Parkinson's disease diagnosis, date of death, date of emigration, or the end of the follow-up period on 31 December 2010, depending on which came first. A total of 286 cases of Parkinsonism were identified in that period.
In highlighting the strength of the study, Wirdefeldt continued, "Another major strenght of this study is that we considered the entire spectrum of daily energy output, rather than purely focusing on dedicated exercising. Futher we conducted a rich set of sensitivity analysis to test the robustness of our findings".
Converting activity information into metabolic equivalent (MET) hours per day, the results show that those who spent more than 6 hours per week on the same type of activities had a 43% lower risk of developing Parkinson's disease.
"We found that a medium level of daily physical activity is associated with a lower risk of Parkinson's disease. the protective effets of physical activity was further supported when we summarized all available evidence from published perspective cohort studies. These findings are important for both the general population and for the healthcare of patents with Parkinson's disease".
There seem to be great patches of light everywhere, just recently Medical News Today reported a breakthrough in stem cell treatment for Parkinson's disease, showing the possibility of making dopamine cells from embryonic stem cells and transplant them into the brain to replace those lost to the disease.
